It’s a beautiful day outside so you make plans to pack up the troops and head to the park. Most people don’t give a second thought to the “what ifs” in life because they are only possibilities. But what if you woke up abruptly to the sounds of planes flying overhead and rapid gunfire in the distance? And, if that’s not bad enough, you have no water or electricity.

Weathering Any Storm: Survival Tips You Need to Know  - It's a beautiful day outside so you make plans to pack up the troops and head to the park. Most people don't give a second thought to the "what if’s” in life because they are only possibilities. But what if you woke up abruptly to the sounds of planes flying overhead and rapid gunfire in the distance? #food #hunting #survival #prepping

With the unrest in the world today, the “what ifs” may be closer to that happening than you may think.

Thankfully, even if you possess no survival skills, you can learn what you need to know to protect yourself and your loved ones. You’ll even learn how to properly pack a survival kit with life-essential supplies like water, a first aid kit, blankets, a source of fire, and a bow and arrow to have readily available.

Survival Tips You Need to Know

Creating a Fire

In the movies, they make starting a fire look easy. Truth be told, starting one with just a few small sticks of wood can become quite challenging.

You may point out that you have a lighter. However, chances are pretty good that in the event of a real emergency you’re going to focus more on getting out than locating a lighter.

Friction creates heat, then smoke, then fire. In theory, anyone who creates friction on dry wood by either twisting it with your hands or rubbing two dry sticks together in a back and forth motion can create a fire. This can take some time to master and if you add rain and wind to the mix it will make it even more difficult to accomplish, so make sure you practice (in a safe location, of course)!

Finding Food

In this day of fast food, homecooked meals are rare, let alone hunting for your own sources for sustenance. Unless you’re an avid hunter, this can be one of the most difficult parts of self-preservation.

Most people are clueless about how to catch prey or simply just can’t kill an animal. Let me tell you something, if it comes down to living or dying of hunger, you will find the strength to kill your prey.

In the old days, before guns hit the streets, most people relied on their trusty bows and arrows as a means to support their families. They go in cleanly, are reusable, and kill the animal almost instantly. Plus, if someone attempted to cause harm to your family they are easy to use.

The good news is that you can still purchase them and practice with them in a field with a target of your choice or at an archery range.

Water Source

The rule of threes states that you can survive up to 3 weeks without food. But, sadly, you can survive only 3 days without water. Planning for the worst-case scenario means that you need a way to create a viable drinking water source.

If you need to leave your home immediately, through no choice of your own, you probably also have to travel on foot for a long distance. A water filter (one that’s portable) can help you with the first few go-rounds but they are disposable, meaning they eventually won’t be able to purify the water.

Luckily, things like water purifying tablets are much easier to carry on your person in large quantities, allowing you to drink from any source of water, even a toilet bowl.

Not many people plan for a catastrophe and then when one happens, they get caught off guard. It’s important to learn basic survival skills such as producing a fire, making a shelter, hunting for food, and keeping a healthy supply of water on hand.

The good news is that you can prepare yourself and your family for the worst-case scenario and even run drills periodically to keep everyone on their toes.
