Fish are the best source of protein you can get your hands on in a survival situation. By best I mean for the expenditure of calories.
There are some traditional methods and some simple DIY means of catching fish in survival.
Of course, one of the best ways to catch fish in a survival situation is to use your fishing gear! Modern fishing tackle is popular because it works. You gotta give credit where credit is due.
Nets are one of the oldest means of fishing in our history. They can be incredibly productive. That is such a big deal. Something like a gill net can net you 10’s of fish at a time.
When using nets, you need to have a serious means of dealing with all the fish you are going to harvest. Dont waste them!
From weaving basket traps to making a simple fishing weir, traps can work while you are away. Traditional tackle is made to keep you busy. However, you might need that time for other survival tasks.
Traps are great because you can go away and come back to dinner waiting for you.
A more rarely noted technique is to stun fishing using a chemical called juglone. This juglone cames from the hulls of black walnuts. You can gather those hulls and boil them. The tea that you make is going to be full of juglone.
By dumping this into a slow-moving section of a creek or a pond, it will shock the fish in that area. They will rise to the surface to be taken.
Another great method for fishing is to spear them using a gig. If you can find a nice high bank you might use a gig to deal with those fish. You can even carve a pretty simple gig from a stick using a knife. The gig will do the job!
