What Is The Best SHTF / Disaster Communication?

Just what is the best form of communication if all hell breaks lose or we lose all power?

I found a very in depth article about communication from our friends over at graywolf survival. Like always with graywolf survival, they cut to the chase with no bull. They tell you how it is with the pros and the cons!

For my family we will be relying on my Motorola 23-Mile Range 22-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radio. It is priced at around 40 bucks and the 23 mile radius is just fantastic. I have a small solar charger that can charge these if the power goes out too. The great thing about these radios is:

  • 10-hour alkaline or 8-hour rechargeable battery life
  • 11 weather channels (7 NOAA) with alert features
  • 22 channels each with 121 privacy codes for superior interference protection

I personally think cell phone usage will be very limited or non existent, have you tried to call or text on New Years Eve? Good luck! Think about that if SHTF, everyone and their goats will be trying to call family and friends to see if they are OK. You need a backup plan and a backup backup plan as communication is very important not only to keep in contact but for safety reasons.

Having a system in place to charge small electronic devices is a good idea. If the power goes out how are you going to charge 2 way radios or even a ham radio?

You can make your own solar power solutions cheaply and easily, or you can buy a set up from amazon as a back up. Remember backup plans are essential for survival.
