This is a nice short reality check. The bug out is one heck of a commitment. It’s important to inject some reality into the fantasy of the bug out.
It should really be the last possible option. There are several important issues with bugging out addressed, particularly on food.
One of the biggest is demonstrated right away, which is our ability to overestimate what we are capable of. In prepping we need to be 100% honest about our strengths and weaknesses. We are not Batman.
This type of thinking is most important because you may have others lives in your hands and planning. If you fail it could mean that your whole family fails as well.
Bugging out is a risky business, period. Even if you bugout with a tank!
Covering Ground with a Family
This is a lot harder than you think. The idea that you are going to travel 10 miles a day with kids is going to be very tough. If you are dealing with tough terrain it might be near impossible.
Be wary not to overestimate your on foot capabilities with the ground you can cover.
Your Bugout Location
You have to be very thorough in choosing a BOL. Do not work on hypotheticals here. You need a place you can get to with limited interaction, you need a place that you can protect if need be, and you need to deal with all of this long before the bugout!
You might consider things like survival caches if you are traveling on foot. These are going to lighten the load a bit. You are also going to want to talk to your family about rally points if you want to find each other if your group gets broken up.
There is no guarantee you make it to your BOL so leave early and be stealthy.
