A wood/biomass gasifier can be the solution to this problem, and there is a great step-by-step tutorial on building your own gasifier.  If you re-purpose metal scraps and improvise, this can be a fun, low-cost build.  My generator is pretty minimal at 15 hp, but if you follow the guidelines in the tutorial you could build a gasifier to power a 160 hp engine.
