Everything You Need to Know About Canning Jars (And More!)
Canning and the canning jars we know and use today have a rich and long history behind them. Knowing the history of not only the jars we use, but also how it was first discovered to be a viable method of food preservation is surprising. For example, did you know that we have Napoleon to thank for the reason we use sealed jars? It’s true!
Once upon a time, it was considered an act of patriotism to garden and then can the food you grew during war time. It’s true! Once the war was over though, people went back to buying stuff at the store and canning less…until recently.
Almost everyone has used a ‘mason jar‘ as a glass on a hot summer day, especially if you lived in the country. These wonderful and fairly inexpensive jars are incredibly versatile in their uses for things other than canning and preserving food for 1 – 3 years. Thanks to modern technology, you can even seal your jars using a vacuum sealer instead of being limited to water bath or pressure canning with them. They make wonderful light enhancers, serve as a catch-all spot for buttons or other small things, and are handy to have around. There is a lot more to know about canning jars and canning food in general!
