Whether you realize it or not, there are a number of things we do to stifle effective family prepping. Let’s look at some of them below.

They Do What You Do

Where many preppers get in trouble with family preparedness is they do it in the dark of night and they spend lots of time watching YouTube videos.

This builds up this quiet world of prepping that your family doesn’t know about. You have severity and urgency that they don’t understand. Prep in the daylight, where people can see it. Answer questions and show them your passion.

Include Them

When you go shopping, learning, or training include them. This is very important for your spouse. Your spouse will be more likely to buy in if you make prepping a part of everyday life rather than an exclusive club.

Be sure you offer plenty of opportunities for your family to be included. Also, let them know that you are hiking for. You can frame it as a hike but mention that it’s about fitness and learning about your gear.

Reward Them

In a relationship, rewarding goes a long way. You don’t have to give them a present every time they help you with a prepping task but it helps to praise them and make them feel good about it. This is important.

Set aside some money to get your kids and spouse their own gear that they can carry and feel included with. When you hand your kid his own Ferro rod there is an instant connection and he wants to make his own fire.

Don’t Hold Back

Another effective tip for family preparedness is to be passionate and open. Be prepared to fail and laugh it off. Don’t hold back or hide your aspirations.

We often hide our weak points from family and that coils us up and makes them uncomfortable. Your family will feel much more comfortable if they know you are being real and if making a mistake is not the end of the world.
