One of my favorite YouTube channels, IntenseAngler has a great video on how he made his lightweight tarp from old tents. If I am honest, I would never have thought about this as a tarp replacement just because tent material is so thin.

There is method behind this madness tho, normal tarps are heavy and kinda noisy when rolling and blowing around in the wind. With the re-purposed tent you get super thin, strong and waterproof fabric and you can make the tarp as big or as small as you like.
