Dealing with a future (or impending) hurricane can be a daunting task, especially since most blog posts only give you a few hints and no specific examples of what to get or what to do. What’s needed is a very thorough look at what you need to consider when getting ready for one.
According to this article, there are four time periods that you need to think about when planning for a hurricane (the article goes into great detail of each time period but here is the main gist):
- Well before a storm is forming
The first time period is when things are calm and there’s no immediate threat of a storm hitting your area. This is the time that most people don’t do anything about getting ready (as seen by the run on supplies as soon as a storm is announced). This is also when the bulk of what you need to be doing needs to be done.
- When a hurricane is likely to hit your area
This time period is for last minute preparations to get ready to bunker down at home or to evacuate. At this point, you can’t do much in the way of getting supplies or learning.
- During the storm
This is a real survival situation. Too late to prepare now. You have to react to what comes at this point.
- Dealing with the aftermath
This is actually when the most deaths occur. There are many things to consider to keep yourself and your family alive after a hurricane, including floods, looters, evacuation, etc as well as some practical considerations such as making sure you do what you need to before you leave the property so your insurance can cover it faster.
