How To Make A Toothbrush In The Field - To make a twig toothbrush, simply cut a green twig about the diameter of a pencil and just as long. Pound the end of the twig with a clean, smooth rock. Then chew this end for a minute to moisten and soften the bristles; and finally, brush away.

Hardwood Twigs

A trick of the native Americans was to take hardwood twigs and pound the ends of them. This makes them fray and they become an effective means for getting between teeth. 

Collection of Pine Needles

Also, by bunching up a handful of long pine needles you can use them, and their pine scent, to work like a toothbrush. 

This is a great method because it can be repeated if you are in a pine forest. 

Grow or ID Licorice 

A highly effective root for creating a toothbrush is licorice. You can even grow licorice. Rather than having to pound the root, like the hardwood twigs, you merely chew the end of the root. 

Licorice root not only frays as you chew it and becomes something like a small toothbrush, but it also imparts that licorice flavor that will affect your oral health and breath. 

As you can see there are many methods for creating an effective toothbrush in the wild. It’s not such a lost cause. You can also do things like grow and store the resources you need. A small container with baking soda and essential oils can go a long way in all forms of oral hygiene.
