These could be the perfect reusable means for achieving that backup power source. This can be particularly true for cooking with propane. So how do you go about refilling these tanks?

Tools and Parts

  • 1/4 inch street elbow
  • 1/4 inch MIP quarter turn valve
  • 1/4 inch male pol fitting
  • 1/4 inch female pol fitting
  • Needle nose pliers

Process

These 1lb tanks have a small vent valve on them and you can pull that with a good pair of needle nose. This is going to allow you to completely fill this tank.

First, create your refill adapter by assembling all of your parts. Your valve and your street elbow should be screwed together and then you should have a female and a male adapter on each end. You should also use Teflon tape on this project as it will prevent leaks.

To begin filling the bottles you will need a larger propane tank that you can stand upside down. This can be the wone off your grill at home. Upside down you are going to force propane back into the smaller tank.

As you fill the tank up using your new adapter be sure to pull that vent valve occasionally. When it begins to sputter out propane you are full. It’s that simple!
