Anyone who drives faces the possibility of spending an unplanned night in a vehicle.  Bad weather, breakdowns, running out of fuel, getting stuck are some of the more common reasons why a driver might have to bed down for the night (or perhaps for several nights) until the situation is resolved.

A night in the car does not have to be a life-threatening experience.  Drivers who accept the possibility that the unforeseen may happen are drivers that prepare, in advance, for the experience.  On the other hand, those drivers that deny the possibility may find themselves fighting for their lives until rescue arrives.

Car Kit

Aside from having a car survival kit, everyone should carry a few different things to help them in the event of car problems. Your basic car kit needs to include things like jumper cables, flares, simple tire inflators, fix a flat, basic tools, backup fluids and of course a spare tire.

Trip Communication

Be sure that you communicate your trip to someone you can trust. Tell them where you are going and how you plan on getting there i.e what roads and highways you will be on.  If you can do this you will at least have one person who knows where you are.

They can get you help even if you are trapped without a signal!

Heat and Preps

Next to that car kit, you are going to need some cold weather preps. This comes in the form of things like wool blankets, coats, candles, hand warmers and maybe even a jet boil. Definitely, include some food, you burn lots of calories when you are cold.

A few steps in the winter to prepare for being stuck in the car can make a huge difference. You do not want to be that person who is found dead in your car.
