In every warehouse lot across the nation, there are stacks of pallets. That means we have piles of metal and wood getting moved from one place to another.

Could you use some of these excess materials to build your own homestead? What about revitalizing an older home or homestead?

Whether you’re starting from the ground up with your own homestead, or just looking for an interesting way to spruce up your home, you’ll probably be considering some new flooring.

Disassembling the pallets is probably the most time-consuming and labor-intensive part of the project, but it’s imperative that you take care of this part. All nails have to be removed from the pallet slats, and they need to be kept as intact as possible. For the best end result, you’ll probably need to have access to word working equipment to make all of the slats uniform in thickness and smooth, but installing is a cinch.

Installation

You are going to have to make some efforts to install this pallet wood floor. There will be a need to cut these boards to varying sizes. Be sure you have a good saw close by.

You will also want to invest in a subfloor for your hardwood. They make a number of these but something to create a moisture barrier is really what you are looking for.

Learning how to use the materials around you to save money and complete the work that needs doing is power. It’s the power because you can source what you need and manipulate it just the way you like.  That is the real definition of self-sufficient. We should all strive to understand these base materials and put them to use.
