For years its seems that we have been running scared from the North Koreans and the Iranians. We have been threatened and nervous about their ability to strike us with nuclear weapons. Lately, however, we are seeing that the next deadly and cataclysmic nuclear exchange might not involved America at all!
Yes, we are talking about two nuclear powered countries in India and Pakistan. While you might not look at these nations as powerhouses that could affect the whole planet, you might just be underestimating the power of modern nuclear weapons.
These south Asian nations are very close to other nations and the fallout could vastly affect how the rest of war like this would play out. Lets look at three very serious effects of a limited nuclear exchange between India and Pakistan.
The fallout from this nuclear war could blow into China and affect food production on a massive scale. In fact, a group called Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War estimate that 1 billion people could be killed in an excahnge like this, just from the food production being affected in neighboring areas.
Global Economic Effects
India is a massive economy on our planet. They have seen tremendous growth since taking on the capitalist system. Even a limited nuclear exchange would affect how they interact with the world. The ripples would affect global markets for some time.
Imagine you are China and this war next door is dumping nuclear fallout into the fields you use to feed your people. Do you think you are going to sit back and let this happen? Not likely. The fact is China would retaliate in a big way if their food production is compromised and that has even bigger implications.
There is nothing pretty about nuclear war. Lets hope cooler heads prevail.
