As the growing season approaches we are all excited about the prospect of growing and eating fresh foods. Perhaps the winter has had you awash in low-quality supermarket produce or you have been suffering through canned vegetables and dried foods.

We are quickly approaching planting. That means we are but weeks away from the first lettuces, radish, and peas to come popping from the ground and into our mouths.

However, with those plants come the pests that also like to eat them. From those that fly or squirm, your plants will be under serious assault and it will be up to you to save them. Now you can go the harsh chemical route and contaminate the foods your family eats and the groundwater and the soil or you can get smart and make your own homemade pest spray.

Garlic

A powerful irritant to most bugs the garlic in your pest spray will be your first line of defense. In a quart jar, you can add 4-5 cloves of chopped up garlic.

Red Chili Flake

Pepper spray works on attackers just as well as it works on aphids! You will use the capsaicin in your red chili flake to burn those pests, as well. Use about a tablespoon of red chili flake to mix in with your garlic.

Dish Soap

Finally, to make it near impossible to move, get away, or get closer to your food, you can add a few glugs of dish soap to your ball jar. Be sure it’s not antibacterial or it could affect your soil quality. Look for something like borax or environmentally friendly dish soap.

Fill your jar to the top with water and shake thoroughly. Now you can add this mix to a spray bottle and if its not full fill that up to the top. You won’t dilute this mix too much. Locked and loaded.
