It wasn’t until this year that I even heard of grow bags. I received a few from my father in law and we set out to give them a try.

There are many varieties of grow bags and some are more simple than others. When it comes to having limited funds to build something like a nice raised bed the bags give you options. One of the best options is to create a growing medium that is completely customized. As you know the soil is everything and its no different when using grow bags.

Watering

The only thing about grow bags that you have to be wary of is watering. Remember, the bags are above ground and warm summer days will dry out in 8-10 hot hours. That is a big deal. For plants like tomatoes, this can be a death sentence.

Water often!

Soil

One of the best parts about growing in bags is you decide what goes in the bags. You can create your own soil. You have the ability to amend the soil in any way possible. You can fix the PH or you can fill them up with rock dust to mineralize that soil.

It’s all an incredible little process. You can create the soil of your dreams. Or the soil of your eggplant’s dreams.

Placement

Where you place and move those grow bags is going to make your endeavor a success, as well. The placement of the grow bags, while not permanent, has a lot to do with the sun. You want to be careful about when you need more sun and when you need less. Sometimes those searing August days are enough to kill your plants.

Find a few good spots in your garden for these bags to be set and to be moved. Grow bags are going to make a huge difference in a small garden.
