The power outage is a close relative to every disaster. Sometimes they happen for reasons we cannot even explain.
Mitigating power loss is a huge first step when it comes to recovering from a disaster. This is especially true when it comes to summer and winter.
When you are surrounded by elements that could prove deadly you need to have an answer for that. Some of this also depends on the person in the home as well. Some people can get along fine without power. However, most of us need answers.
There are two things you can do to quickly take back control in a power outage.
Build a Blackout Kit
A simple kit that should be in every household in America is a blackout kit. It’s not a big deal but it makes everything easier when the lights go out.
You are going to want a means of immediately putting lights on
You are going to want to immediately affect the temperature in extreme seasons
- USB powered fans
- Off-grid heating potential ( wood stove, fireplace)
- Power bank and space heater
Some blackout entertainment is another big piece of the puzzle
- Board games
- Card games
- Ready to eat foods and snacks
Dont forget your phone chargers either!
After initiating your blackout kit and getting lights and maybe temp manipulation, you are going to want to know why the power went out.
You need an emergency radio, maybe a police scanner and a means of communicating within the community. The biggest reason behind having outage intelligence is to assure you can ID an EMP.
If your power outage is an EMP it changes everything. Life gets really crazy. You need to be able to take action immediately if the power is never coming back on!
