Did you know there are some foods that will literally last longer than you? Some foods need light and humidity to go bad, so as long as you keep them dry and in a cool, dark location, they can last practically forever.
If you’re new to food storage, this is a great way to get started. You’ll immediately have a stockpile of foods that are guaranteed to be good to eat whenever you might need them. Heck, even if you don’t ever need them, maybe your kids or grandkids will. They’ll still be edible!
Honey is a great example. A few years ago, archaeologists were excavating Egypt’s pyramids when they found several pots of honey that were nearly 3,000 years old. And believe it or not, they were still edible!
Granted, the honey had crystallized, but once they broke it down and heated it up, it was just like regular honey. One archaeologist said it tasted delicious. That’s why honey is often referred to as one of the “forever foods.”
Another example is hardtack. It’s made of flour, water, and salt. And although it doesn’t taste very good, soldiers used to carry it with them during the Civil War because they knew it wouldn’t go bad. And actually, it did taste all right once they added it to soup or dunked it in coffee.
There are at least 15 forever foods out there, and technically, many of them are considered ingredients, not foods. A few examples include maple syrup, salt, soy sauce, sugar, and white vinegar.
Still, they’re all things you want to have on hand so you can cook meals from scratch after a major disaster. Or if you’re just trying to live off the grid. By doing this, you’ll save lots of money and won’t ever have to worry about expiration dates.
