Many preppers store seeds and that is likely a good idea for both growing food and bartering.

However, perennial plants are going to give you the ability to do that, too! You are not going to have to worry about planting seeds year over year!

There are all kinds of great foods that are perennial.

  • Asparagus
  • Walking Onion
  • Fennel
  • Elderberry
  • Hazelnut
  • Blackberry
  • Raspberry
  • Blueberry
  • Sunchoke

These are just an example of a few great perennials that grow year over year.

Dividing and Bartering Perennials

Not only will your perennial plants come back year over year to feed yourself, but they can also be divided at the roots and spread around your property.

When you divide a perennial, you will find that by dividing the roots, you can often share plants with others or barter them.

Of course, if your plant’s roots do not divide well, you could always barter with the seeds.

The seeds of the walking onion will come back years later and actually plant themselves. Tomatoes will grow one year and be finished.

Which seeds do you think will carry a heavier value during a barter situation?

Adding Perennials to your Garden

It is fall now, and we are going to be finishing up the growing season soon. Maybe you are going to add some new trees in the fall.

Be sure you plan on adding these plants to your garden so that they come back year after year.

Remember, the first year or two will be investment years, and you might not get much or any production, but in time you will be feeding your family with perennial plants.
