It’s rare that we fully understand the risk that is presented before us. If we calculated the full extent of danger we were in when leaving the home, no one would leave the home! Fortunately, for society, we are ok with risks on the roads, risks in the stores, and risks in hostile environments.
A lot of content is given to the idea of situational awareness and for good reason. However, we have to be very careful about the moves we make once we are aware of a threat.
We live in very strange times when heroes can be made into villains and vice versa. To take action against an attacker is not as easy as training for it.
Life and Limb
The obvious concern is the fact that you could lose something that is impossible to get back. Violence is always a mystery. When it comes few people can truly predict the outcome.
There are lots of variables. There are a few things in life that you cannot take back.
Of course, you could lose your own life in that struggle. Worse, you could lose someone very close to you. The first option should always be to avoid that threat. It’s critical.
Litigation
As we mentioned earlier, you can become a villain if you don’t know the rules of engagement. Even when you feel like your life is threatened you might still put yourself in a situation that could have you wind up in jail.
Just as important as it is to know how to act you must also know when to and when not to! Also the degree of the act. It’s not a black and white issue.
When you recognize threats from a distance you have more time to process these things. That could be the difference between going home or going to the police station for questioning.
