America does not put a lot of stock in evacuation. You can look at the last big disasters in America and see how, very simply, how little we prepare for evacuation. This is not to point fingers its to recognize an area of improvement and capitalize on it.
Of course, not all disasters give you the heads up to evacuation. Sometimes things just happen, like tornadoes. For those we just need plans that make sense in a hurry. However, there are some disaster that we can use an evacuation and just get out of harms way altogether. This wont save our homes or property but that doesn’t matter if we are there or not.
Lets talk about the top disasters to evacuate well before.
The most obvious disaster to evacuate from is a hurricane and this is the best example of Americans taking the right steps to stay alive through evacuation. We see them heading up highways and away from danger. There are some people who wait it out and drain resources to be rescued. Don’t be that person.
The size and scope of recent wildfires has given people a lot to think about. It would seem that self imposed evacuation in this case is going to go a long way for those in the path of fast moving fires on the winds of the Santa Anna.
This is a less conventional mention but it speaks to our lack of inspiration when it comes to evacuation. Blizzards are a serious inconvenience and they make for nightmarish commutes and power outages, amongst other issues.
Most of the time the kids are out of school anyway. Make it a long weekend and go spend a few days in a hotel till the roads get clear and you can get back to life as it should be.
I know lots of people are saying, I cant just miss work and jump in a hotel. Well, challenge yourself to figure out what you need to change to be able to do that.
