Between grass clippings, food scraps and leaves, you have the ability to make your own growing soil! Do you understand how incredible that is? It’s outrageous. You can actually fill raised beds without going to the hardware store.

Are you seeing the value here? The gold!

Well, it means that despite the condition of the world around you, you can create your own dirt and grow food in it. It’s a powerful thing. Food is power and you cannot discount that.

Winter Composting

Compost piles are warm and they are alive. The leaves and such are in the process of breaking down. It’s an incredible practice. You are going to be dealing with a struggle if you take this on in winter. A frozen pile of compost is not breaking down.

Of course, that doesn’t mean that you cannot get it done.

Turn Often

To speed up the production of compost you should turn it often. Put your pile in direct sunlight turn it each day and cover it. This is very important. If it is moving and getting some sun during the winter it will stay warm.

Once the engine is revving on the compost pile you can cover it and it will be working up its own heat.

Add Some Beer!

Sometimes you need to kickstart the process when you are composting, particularly in winter. You can add chemicals to make that happen. Beer is a great one! Also, a little ammonia can get the breakdown started.

Like most things in the world of preparedness, there is always an answer. Where there is a will there is a way!
