If we are going to talk about blades for survival and for preppers, I guess its important that we talk about the types of blades that you are going to want to have on hand.

Top Blades for Any Prepper - These three blades are critical to the survivor. Now, you can expand upon these but I wouldn't want to be caught in the cold season woods without these blades.

Now, I am not going to get into blade types like drop point, dagger, tanto and the like. Instead, I am talking about three edge types in particular.

Serrated

Your folding saw or saw blades are serrated and its the scalloped serrations that cut the wood up so well. This type of blade is essential when you are looking to cut larger pieces of wood. Batoning your cutting tool is not the best method.

Cutting Blade

This should be a knife or a machete. You want a blade that is used as a cutting tool for doing things like cutting meat, curling wood and maybe even minor whittling tasks.

Wedged Blade

Here we are talking about your axe or hatchet. If you want to be efficient with processing wood for a fire you need to have a wedged blade like this. Its a cold weather must have because you need a lot of wood and a big fire to keep warm.

It’s also worth talking about blade sharpening. No matter how many blades you have, if they aren’t sharp then you are going to have to work twice as hard. That is just the fact of the matter. Its a struggle to get things done properly with a dull blade. It’s also very dangerous.

To avoid using dull blades you need to have the right equipment for sharpening blades and you also need to set time aside to do it.
