Getting kids involved in preparedness can be a struggle. It doesn’t help that you are facing off against some of the most powerful tech in existence. I am talking about the digital device! Wrangling the Ipad from your child can be a tear-inducing experience for both of you!

Then you tell them you want to talk about emergency preparedness and they are going to fall asleep on the same couch they were playing on.  That can be a problem with kids and survival. That said, there are a variety of projects that work to peak the interested of your little guy or gal.

In this article we are going to talk about fire! FIRE!

No child in this world can refuse fun with parents and fire.

If you have old wax or old busted up crayons you can use there to make some very effective firestarters. You need the following as well as the crayons.

  1. Shredded Paper
  2. Wax Paper Cups

In a double boiler, you are going to melt your crayons down over low heat. Next, you are going to take your small ketchup wax paper cups and fill them with shredded paper. Don’t pack them tightly but fill them. Remember fire needs oxygen.

Next, you are going to pour some wax, to coat, on these items. This is going to harden as it dries. Once these are dry you are going to have some incredible little firestarters that pack well and work like a charm.

These can be stored in plastic bags. These fire starters will burn for about 15 minutes! They are very easy to light and you can do so with some dryer lint and a ferrocerium rod. That is about as simple a fire setup as you are going to find.

Of course, the best part about this is that you can share the creation and the finished product with your kids. That is forever!
