Whole Foods For Longer Shelf Life
Preppers tend to want things that will last decades in their stock pile. They look for whatever has the longer shelf life. They buy freeze dried food by the bucket loads and tend to overlook storing whole foods! There are numerous reasons why storing whole foods is a very smart step to take in your preparedness plan. Whole foods like wheat berries will last much longer than wheat flour will, take up less space, and can be used to make more than just bread. Plus, the berries tend to cost less than the flour!
Wheat berries are only one example of whole foods that, when properly stored, can last for 10+ years versus the flour that will only last a few years. When you grind the berries down, you are exposing more of it to air. Air is one of the 4 food storage enemies that works with bacteria to ‘eat’ your food and make it go bad.
Whole rice versus rice flour, whole beans versus cooked and dehydrated…all these things have a longer shelf life, especially when you’re doing it yourself! Work smarter, not harder and stop making some company rich. You can do it yourself and not only save money; you will also have a larger variety in your preps! Don’t forget that many grains are also seeds that you can use to grow more food!
