The world of preparedness and self-reliance is as full of good information as it is of excuses. People are looking for a reason to not make a move in the right direction.
They torture themselves because then they have to live with that.
“I don’t have room for a garden!”
If you are going to start raising row crops and grains, the average suburban backyard is not going to get it done for you. However, if you are willing to open your mind to new ideas there is really no limit to what you can achieve. This is even true on a small suburban lot.
Large agricultural spaces are based on massive plots of land. This is how things like wheat and corn have to grow. There is no vertical options, yet.
The backyard gardener, however, can skirt those massive land issues by growing up. Things like Zucchini can grow up posts and things like melons can be grown on vertical trellises. If you are thinking about this you can get a serious garden going just by having a few pieces of vertical hardware.
The Pallet Garden
Using the backside of a pallet you can make a piece of vertical gardening hardware that takes about 10 minutes to create.
Flip the pallet over and remove the center most board on the backside of the pallet.
This is going to give you three distinct growing areas.
You can either build a box within these boards or you can simply insert a growing box into these sections. See the picture above.
You will have great success with things like strawberries, lettuces, herbs and green beans in this vertical gardening model.
Sand it down, polish it up, paint words or pictures on the thing, it’s up to you!
Bonus: How to Make Pemmican, the Original Survival Food
Invented by the natives of North America pemmican was used by Indian scouts as well as early western explorers.
Native Americans spent a great deal of time on the go and depended on having portable, high-energy, highly nutritious, and filling foods that would last for long periods of time without refrigeration.
Pemmican is a portable, long-lasting, high-energy food. It's made of lean, dried meat that's crushed into powder and mixed with hot, rendered fat. This makes it one of the ultimate foods to have stockpiled for when SHTF or disaster strikes.
People really should avert their gaze from the modern survival thinking for just a bit and also look at how folks 150 years ago did it.
These guys were the last generation to practice basic things, for a living, that we call "survival skills" now.
