It will not be uncommon for people to raid storage units, but we can use a storage unit on the outskirts of town to store a prepper cache full of items, including food.
Of course, this assumes you trust the owner and will be able to get to that stuff after a collapse. The struggle with the urban environment is always the same.
There is no place to produce food. Even rooftop gardens would be inefficient to feed the whole population. You have to keep your options open.
