We have all seen or heard about the evacuation shelters and the horror stories that often go along with them.
Evacuation is not something that we should guess about. Having a concrete plan for evacuation is very important. It can get you and your family out of harm’s way in a hurry.
There are some situations that we face that are just too much for any amount of prepping.
No matter how much food you have on your shelves, if the shelves are underwater, it’s not going to help you. So, we need to think more about what we are going to do to be effective when it comes time to leave.
In this article, we are going to look at ways that you can avoid falling victim to evacuation shelters.
You see, a strong hurricane puts 20–30 people in a gymnasium for days with blankets and food rations. What happens when something even worse comes along? Are you going to be safe in an evacuation shelter?
Know your Plan
First and foremost, evacuation has to happen deliberately. You need to sit down and discuss evacuation with your family and know what to do. Write it down and create written steps that need to be taken before you leave the house.
Leave Early
If you are in the crosshairs of a potential storm, take action. Take action early. Don’t wait for everyone else to be stuck on the highway. This is a very important step.
It’s rare that people are faced with a powerful category 4 storm that is going to hit dead on. Just take off for a few days in the woods. Turn that nightmare into a few days to go away.
Of course, this all goes back to having an emergency fund. You have to have some money put away for situations like this.
Have Multiple Locations
Another huge benefit is having several locations to evacuate to. It might not always be as easy as heading inland.
Be prepared for all that could come by spending time planning. Avoid those nightmarish, government-created emergency shelters.
