A wood/biomass gasifier can be the solution to this problem, and there is a great step-by-step tutorial on building your own gasifier. 

If you re-purpose metal scraps and improvise, this can be a fun, low-cost build.  My generator is pretty minimal at 15 hp, but if you follow the guidelines in the tutorial, you could build a gasifier to power a 160 hp engine.

This instructional has plenty of tips for a successful build, as there aren’t a lot of different parts to a gasifier, just careful (and airtight!) assembly. Fun fact: this tutorial was put together by a 15-year-old!
