Quail are smaller than chickens but they pack a powerhouse of work around your home! Quail eat more ticks than spiders do and are vocal alarm systems for when things aren’t right. Chickens will alarm you, too, but they tend to be larger and noisier birds.

The noise and smell are usually the reasons given for the bans on raising chickens in certain HOAs and other municipalities. Just because you live in an HOA doesn’t mean you need to give up on your dreams!

There are other advantages to raising quail, too! The start-up costs and maintenance are much lower than chickens are, not to mention take up much less space to be happy and healthy. Their eggs are delicious and are considered a delicacy in many parts of the world!

Meat Birds

Quail are small but they are delicious. A plate full of grilled quail can be some of the most incredible eating. They come to maturity pretty quickly and can be had as meat birds pretty quickly. 

Backyard protein is an essential part of your self-reliance and independence. If you can produce protein in your backyard it means you dont have to go looking for it, hunting it or buying it from anyone. It’s captive and it’s yours.

Now is the time to get to know the laws in your area. Speak with the people at zoning and the people at animal control. Get the full scoop on what is allowed and what is not. You cannot count on the hearsay of others.
