Keeping chickens is one of the first big steps you can take towards taking back your freedom, in terms of food production. While gardening is amazing and will offer you tons of food, there is just something about a renewable protein source. There is something about those little eggs showing up each day.
Keeping chickens also comes with plenty of challenges and the biggest is how you choose to raise them. You might like raising your own chickens because of the prospect of letting them roam free in the yard and feast on all the delightful grubs and ticks and earthworms.
That is special but it comes with serious risk. You see, chicken is delicious. Everyone knows it. Every hawk, fox, possum, racoon and dog in the area.
There is nothing like the presence of a canine to deter chicken predators. Of course, you have to be sure your dog doesn’t become a predator. If your dog gets used to your chickens he can become a serious ally in the battle against chicken predators.
These things actually work. You need to move them around but they can be very effective. At night you can also employ an owl which can stave off unwanted attacks on the coupe while you sleep.
Be outside when the flock is outside! This one is a no brainer. No animal is coming in your yard if a big stinky human is in there. Animals hide from us as best they can so get outside and watch that flock. Do yard work or play in the garden but be present.
Keeping a small flock is not hard at all and its a great opportunity for your family. If you can keep them safe you will reap the benefits of fresh eggs daily.
