Its all about the soil. If you plan on growing a survival garden or would like to start seeing real results from your current garden I have to tell you, step one is great soil.
You can spend years fighting and amending clay based soil into becoming something more. With poor soil you will fight things like compaction which will either drown your plants or dehydrate them.
Composting is a vital part of the process. Good soil and sustainable food growing require that you learn about and begin your own compost pile.
Compost brings nutrients to your plants and breaks up tough soil in your garden but it also has watering benefits and even carbon benefits. Its also ridiculously easy to execute. If you have leaves and grass, you can get it done. If you have chickens you can make something even more special.
The Healing Powers
The healing powers of compost have everything to do with adding to your soil. These things are called amendments. Some people add things like Azomite, fish, seaweed and any number of other amendments to their soil.
Compost does a lot of the same things but it’s FREE! As long as you have a bin you can create your own compost from grass clippings and leaves. Turn it often and you will see the breakdown in a hurry.
You can either till the compost into your soil or outright remove soil and plant into holes that are filled with compost. You might also add a layer of compost each year to garden rows and growing pots. Over time this will become the basis of your growing soil.
Keep Adding Amendments
As the years go on keep adding amendments and in no time you will have soil that looks nothing like that which you started with. In some areas, you need to literally transform the ground underfoot in order to make it viable.
