We all have found ourselves worried about the worst-case scenario in a wilderness environment. It might come as you plan your next wilderness adventure. These thoughts might come as you lay in your hammock at night. You might be worried about animals or getting lost.
The basis for much survival training has to do with the concerns of getting lost. We realize that the things on our backs are limited. Its tough. You can only carry so much but one of the things that you can carry very little of is water. Anyone who knows how quickly we can die without water has some minor concerns when it comes to running out of the water.
Water Borne Pathogens
Because we understand waterborne pathogens so well it also makes a very paranoid. We have to look at this stuff in perspective. If you get too much of these waterborne pathogens in your system you are going to get sick with vomit and diarrhea.
This is why so many of us carry water filters. We are concerned about these pathogens that we feel like we have to filter our water no matter what. Is that always the case?
Short Term Wilderness Survival
The average short term wilderness survival situation lasts 72 hours. That means that you are going to need a drink. It also means you aren’t going to feel the effects of that unfiltered mountain stream water that you drink. If you don’t have a filter just drink the water you need to get by.
This is strictly for wilderness survival because these situations are usually short term. The pathogens will take a few days before they begin to take hold. You could drink the water and find that nothing happens at all!
So if it comes down to it, drink the water!
