Survival is a complex way of living nowadays and it’s mostly based on stockpiling resources and buying survival gear. The abundance of TV shows, magazines, books and all sorts of online information complicates things and it can become overwhelming for the average Joe. My friend Dan, a descendant of the Piqwacket Native American tribe shared with me some of the survival lessons he learned while growing up. This knowledge was passed on from one generation to another and everyone can benefit from their teachings.

For the Native people of our country, survival wasn’t something extraordinary as it is being portrayed today and it was just something they did every day. Here are the lessons they left us:

  1. It’s all about common sense

There is no greater survival tool than your own mind and you can achieve great things if you put your brain to work. It is astonishing how many people die around the world in these modern times because they aren’t using common sense. They found themselves in nasty situations and because they didn’t use their head, they ended up dead. My friend told me something that I will never forget: “people today don’t know how to live with the land and they are afraid, they panic and they stop to think”. This is mostly our fault because we stopped exploring and we are used to do everything with just one click. Instead of going camping teenagers today organize “gaming parties”. Instead of promoting basic survival lessons in schools, we make fun of people trying to teach us how to become self-sufficient and we call them crazy.
