Lets get a little dystopian in this post about urban survival threats. We needn’t look very far in history to see what it looks like when an urban sprawl falls apart. Even for a short time things can get dire.

The mass of Americans live paycheck to paycheck and they are not prepared for a serious disaster.

You might picture a bleak world where there are roving gangs and leaders who rule by strength alone. Sure, it could get to that point but there are some urban survival threats that will strike early on, and we need to consider those.

The better you understand the threats of that landscape the better you can prepare for them.

Disease

The number one killer in a highly populated urban survival situation is going to be disease. Its that simple. Without waste management trash and human waste is going to pile up all over and you are going to see disease spread like wildfire.

Martial Law

Absolute power corrupts absolutely. You are going to see that rear its ugly head in the form of Martial Law if these forces are stretched thin throughout an entire nation there will be sparse leadership and over sight. We will see the worst in those people who are supposed to be keeping order.

Desperate Masses

While this group is often categorized as the greatest threat, I think I would leave that to the disease. It would only take about a week in a true collapse before people really started killing to feed their family. If you take the water away from that situation you could see that insanity even quicker.

If an urban area is cut off from resources, everything will be gone and chaos will ensue in a matter of days. In this situation you have very few options. You must create a powerful community defense or get out of dodge!
