While it is well known that your bugout bag should be dominated by ready to eat foods, what about bugging out in the cold or what happens when all that ready to eat food runs out? Well, there could come a time where you are cooking food. You might be cooking some fish that you caught or a squirrel that you trapped.
If you are bugging out and trying to remain unnoticed I would hope that you aren’t firing off the 12 gauges for dinner. That would bring a lot of unwanted attention. Instead, you should be focusing on cooking and killing methods that do not bring lots of attention to you. This is all about cooking meat on the go. It requires that you be thoughtful and cunning.
One of your greatest allies in the battle of cooking on the go and being less of a target is the Dakota Fire. This is a method of building a fire underground. It keeps the glow of the flames out of sight and you can also disperse the smoke by building the fire under a thick layer of pine bows or other leafy tree branches.
You need to dig two holes next to each other. Separated them by about 2 feet and then connect the two holes underground. They don’t have to be deep holes. You build your fire in one side and let the smoke escape and oxygen enter through the other side.
