What makes up a family? Are your pets part of the family? Every time we see a serious natural disaster there are all kinds of people who abandon their pets.
The people don’t make the news but the lonely, scared pets do. They wander the scattered and damaged world looking for their owners, looking for food.
While it might seem like a no brainer to you, its not 100% sure that people are going to be able take their pets or even desire to take their pets. That is real. Its sad but its real. So, if you are one of those good pet owners that will take your dogs, what are you going to do. How do you evacuate with your pet, effectively.
There are three important things that you need to consider when you are planning evacuation with an animal.
This being the most important because you are going to have to wind up somewhere that accepts pets. If not you are already up against it. So if its a hotel or a relatives home be sure they know you have pets coming.
Don’t sacrifice family food to pets. Its also not that good for them. Carrying pet food adds weight but its worth it. Be sure you have enough food for a few days evacuation in packs. If you have a dog you can even outfit them with a vest to carry their own food.
Be honest about your pets level of training. If your evacuation turns into something more serious, is your dog going to get you killed? Can you keep it quiet if you need to? These are hard questions to answer but they need to be answered today. Don’t wait until its too late.
In most cases you are gonna pack fido up with some food and a place to go and these evacuations should be no problem. However, taking the proper steps ahead of time, like choosing a hotel that excepts pets, will make evacuation much easier.
