The Survival Rule of Three

The traditional rule of three has to do with how long one can stay alive. It’s well known.

The Survival Rule of Three - You just never know when you might find yourself in a life-threatening situation. Being aware of our bodies’ limits and requirements for basic survival is the first, and most crucial step towards getting through a dangerous situation.

  • 3 minutes without air
  • 3 days without water
  • 3 weeks without food

There is another way to look at survival and the rule of three. Its a means of understanding and how you prioritize. While the previous rule of three can help you with survival, our exploration is different and will look at the first steps to take in a survival situation. 


The first concern in a survival situation is water how much do you have, how much more can you get, and where can you get more. 

The area you decide to make camp should at least point you in the direction of water, if possible. Knowing where a clean running water source is will up your survival odds substantially. 


To combat the elements and to boil your water, get a fire going next. This will heat you and take care of your cooking needs, as well. Even if things get cold or rain comes, your raging fire will stand up to it if you get it roaring.

Fire takes time and a big fire takes a lot of time. Get a glowing coal bed and you will have a fire the whole night through as long as you can fuel it.

To be sure, gather 3x the wood fuel you think you need. 


The shelter is very important though I would worry about fire and water first. 

Carry your shelter. Be sure that you have cordage, a good tarp and some stakes in your pack. With these three you are going to have to shelter up in minutes. 

That said, be sure you know how to make a couple of simple shelters from the sticks and leaves around you. 

The Survival Rule of Three — Survival skills are not just for the outdoorsy types. You just never know when you might find yourself in a life-threatening situation. An ice storm can wipe out a power grid and make roads impassable for days.
