There are few people who hate the cold more than me. When the weather begins to cool you start to formulate that list of duties that must take place. There are a number of things that you must do just before winter gets into the swing.
Now this varies between someone with a standard on the grid home compared to an off the grid home. Now imagine when a blizzard or an ice storm is headed your way.
Do you have a plan for dealing with a blizzard or ice storm?
Of course, I mean the things that follow, particularly the cold! Do you have other ways to warm your home or ways to get out and get more resources?
One of the most important things you need to consider is how you are going to keep warm. You should consider a means of either powering a small space heater or have access to plenty of wood that will keep your family warm.
Invest in a wood stove to give you a heating and cooking option.
When the power goes out and things get iced over its important to have a means of getting intel on when the power will be back on and whats the condition outside of your own home and block. Comms can mean something as simple as a cellphone and a way to charge it or HAM radio.
Hot liquids and warm meals are the mortal enemies of the cold. Be sure you can cook over a fire and best if that fire is indoors.
You will be bored without power. Be sure that you have some answers for your family when it comes to being bored. Gather some good off grid entertainment!
