Another big benefit when it comes to turkeys is the vast array of predators that come to eat chickens slims substantially when you have a full-grown turkey. They are also tremendous bug eaters and when they are juveniles they do not scratch but eat beetles like crazy.

I noticed that much of the items needed to handle turkey chicks are very similar to what is needed to take care of baby chickens. Let’s look at the most important items.

The Coop

You need a place for these little chicks to hang out! If they are young enough that might be a box with a  heat lamp but eventually, they are going to come outside and they need to be protected by a good coop.

The Feeder

The food these chicks eat is very important and helps them grow quickly. They need a collection of nutrients and they need to get strong so they can protect themselves. The right feeder will keep the food off the ground and keep bedding and droppings out of the food.

The Waterer

The type of waterer you choose will make all the difference in how often you have to fill the waterer or how much water your birds have access to. Water is essential for all life so be sure it’s easy for them to access and always full.

The Perch

Turkeys perch in pine trees in the wild. They are going to want to do the same thing in captivity. Giving these chicks somewhere to perch is good for them.

The Protection

Once they go outside you are going to want to assure you have some added protection like fencing, locks and maybe even lights. You know that turkey is delicious, the foxes know that too!
