If we are honest about survival needs, food is not on the top list. It doesn’t even make the top three! Those go to shelter, fire and water. Food comes next but we can go much longer without food.
So if we are going to talk about the food what types of foods are the best to source in a survival situation. Many people think about things like hunting and trapping or even foraging. These are all good options but, they pale in comparison to that which fish provides.
Fish is a captive food source, high in protein, that can be had pretty simply.
Survival Fishing Methods
You can gather fish using a number of methods. Some are passive and some are active.
Throwing nets is a great way to catch fish. It is one of the oldest methods used to catch fish. Having a good net can actually gather more fish than you can ever use!
The fishing gear that you use on the weekends is just as effective as any other means. The big problem with it is that its an active form of food procurement. In other words, you have to be there and reel and cast. That can take away from other important tasks.
Using things like fishing weir is a great way to catch fish. These best part about these traps is that they are passive. This gives you time to leave them and go to work on other tasks.
You can also make fish traps from soda bottles. This is a great DIY and you can often scavenge all you need from the environment around you.
Dont discredit a net full of small sunfish. They will go a long way to feeding your body. A large basketful of foraged roots are going to offer you very little protein but a few fish over the fire give our body what its looking for.
